I’m making an experimental short drama film. The film follows Joe, an average dude who struggles to navigate his way through quarantine and keep his mental health intact. The film will be about the random experiences that Joe has so that the audience can really relate to him and find comfort in knowing that they aren’t alone in feeling this way. He talks to friends, tries to get exercise and does his best to keep in a good state of mind but as the film progresses it gets harder and harder for him.
The story is non-linear and each scene takes place almost at entirely different times. The reason for this is that they don’t necessarily need to, I’m not going for a traditional film structure. The narrative unfolds what seems very randomly but is actually important experiences that Joe has structured in a non-linear way, making it so you never really know what’s going to happen to Joe next.
The film is told from Joe’s perspective and the film has no dialogue. Instead we hear voice over from Joe’s subconscious speaking in the third person, detailing Joe’s thoughts and feelings and how he’s interpreting everything we see around him. The film will be shot in a 1:1 box aspect ratio to add to the sense of claustrophobia and physically denying the audience of literally seeing the bigger picture. Speaking of audience my target audience is people aged around 16 and upwards, as the main character is around 18 years old. I feel that these are the main people that will understand and relate to the film in the way that I want them to. I’m aiming more towards a male audience due to the fact that the main character is a man and that I haven’t got a strong understanding of what lockdown has been like for women, however I’m hoping that people of all genders and backgrounds can enjoy the film. The film is set in Britain so the film will be most relatable to people from the UK, and I have no real specific target audience in terms of ethnicity of psychographic. I want the film to have something for everyone and be something everyone can take something away from.
The main film I’ve taken inspiration from is like I said It’s Such A Beautiful Day. Because that film uses minimalist 2D animation most of the shots in my film will be static. I want the film to have a distinct look, where there isn’t much to look at, but the images are impactful and clear, just like in Hertzfeldt’s film.
I don’t think I’d ever develop this into something longer in the future. I wanted to make a film about lockdown but make it in a way that’s very unique and emotionally impactful and I think a short film around 12 minutes is the best way of doing that. Hopefully I can submit some of the films to some festivals as well.
I have consent from all of the actors I want to include, assurance from a friend who will make an original music track for the film and consent of a friend to allow me to use his garden for one of the scenes in the film. There are no props or costumes that I need to buy for the film as all the clothing is natural and any props will be accessible to me from my own house. I won’t need to buy anything new for the film. I’ve nearly finished pre-production and will hopefully have plenty of time to actually film the project.
